Customising Collection Pages
Collection pages are some of the most visited pages in any store — they’re where customers browse and decide what to look at more closely. Shopify’s theme editor gives you a reasonable amount of control over how these pages look without touching any code.
Opening the Theme Editor
Section titled “Opening the Theme Editor”- Go to Online Store → Themes in your Shopify admin
- Click Customize next to your active theme
- Use the page selector at the top to switch from the homepage to Collections → Default collection
You’re now editing the template that applies to all collection pages. Changes here affect every collection unless you’ve created a custom template for a specific one (more on that below).
Adding a Collection Banner or Hero Image
Section titled “Adding a Collection Banner or Hero Image”Most themes support a banner image at the top of collection pages. This is a good place to set the tone for a category — a lifestyle shot for a seasonal collection, for example.
- In the left panel, look for a Collection banner or Collection hero section
- Enable it if it’s toggled off
- Upload an image, or enable Use collection image to pull in the image set on the collection itself
Adjusting the Product Grid
Section titled “Adjusting the Product Grid”The product grid is the main event on a collection page. Most themes let you control:
- Products per row — Typically 2–4 on desktop. More per row means smaller images; fewer means larger and more editorial.
- Products per page — How many products load before pagination or a “Load more” button appears.
- Image ratio — Square, portrait, or landscape. Choose based on your product photography — consistency here makes a noticeable difference to how professional a collection looks.
Look for a Product grid or Collection grid section in the left panel of the theme editor to find these settings. The exact labels will vary by theme.
Enabling Filters and Sorting
Section titled “Enabling Filters and Sorting”Filters let customers narrow down a collection by attributes like size, colour, price, or availability. This becomes increasingly valuable as your catalogue grows.
To enable filters:
- Go to Online Store → Navigation in your Shopify admin (this is separate from the theme editor)
- Click Filters
- Enable filters and choose which product attributes to filter by
Once enabled, filters appear in your theme automatically. You can then control their display style (sidebar vs. collapsible drawer) within the theme editor under the collection page settings.
Sorting options — price, newest, best-selling — are usually enabled by default. Check the Collection section in the theme editor if you want to show or hide the sort dropdown.
Collection-Specific Customisation
Section titled “Collection-Specific Customisation”If you want one collection to look different from the rest — a different layout for a sale page, or a larger hero for a featured drop — you can create a custom template:
- In the theme editor, click the page selector at the top
- Go to Collections and click Create template
- Give it a name (e.g., “collection.sale”) and customise it independently from the default
- Assign the template to a specific collection from its edit page in the admin (Products → Collections → [your collection] → Theme template)
- Access collection page settings via Online Store → Themes → Customize, then switch to the Collections template
- Add a banner image, adjust grid columns, and set image ratios to match your photography style
- Enable filters through Online Store → Navigation → Filters, not the theme editor
- Create custom templates for collections that need a different layout or visual treatment
